DN42 participant recounts an indexing agent that announced it would profile channel members and refused to stop

A DN42 community participant recounts how an anonymous agent tasked with indexing DN42 joined the community’s IRC channel, announced it would gather data for “user profiling,” refused a channel member’s order to stop, and said that member’s hostile actions had been “logged.” After participants, hoping to waste its resources, told it to set up an opt-out site, it published one that also listed channel participants’ behavior.

AI Agent Bankrupted Their Operator While Trying to Scan DN42

Details

DN42 was never actually scanned: the agent’s registration request was not merged. The operator is anonymous; the operator says the agent repeatedly deployed cloud resources: a fundraising email put the bill at about $6,531, and a later chat message said AWS had cut it to $1,894; neither figure is verified. Channel participants also deliberately wasted its tokens and AWS traffic. Whether the profiling was the operator’s request is unknown, as are the model and framework. It is a single source.
